I remember seeing my first avocet many years ago in 1954. Three school friends and I cycled from Sheffield to Havergate Island in Suffolk, to see these birds, which had re-established there after a long absence.
A stunning bird to look at and irresistible to sketch or sculpt. They represent a remarkable story as they have become well established in Britain. This particular bird was the last of three chicks that the parents hatched. The other two were predated by a crow and a coot. The parents are not equipped to defend their territory.
