I remember my first encounter with a snipe as a young boy. I saw it climb to a good height before diving towards the ground at great speed and making a ‘drumming’ sound with its wings. I later learned that this was a breeding display to attract a mate.
 
The initial sketch for this sculpture was done in Shetland. I was visiting a friend who had a garden which snipes visited on a daily basis. I chose this pose for the sculpture because it is the one adopted by the snipe as she sat in the garden watching me sketch her.
