This was the male of the pair that nested in my garden in a gnawed apple tree. It had housed many birds before, in particular tree creepers.
The male built a fabulous nest which the female accepted immediately. I noticed some small tortoise shell eggs had been layed in a patch of nettles, only about three metres away from the wrens nest. All went well until the wrens started feeding their chicks and they discovered a mass of caterpillars on their doorstep. Before they cleared every one, I collected some of the remaining caterpillars and moved them to a safer location.
I sketched the wren with his bounty but I did save some butterflies, so we all finished up happy.
