Black guillemots are less numerous that most other seabirds, but, what they lack in numbers, they make up for in appeal. I sculpted this particular bird from one I sketched on the Isle of Arran. It was resting on a boulder and seemed quite unconcerned by my presence. Black guillemots are quite a bit smaller than the common guillemots, but, they are perfectly designed for a life at sea. They are very streamlined and their bright red feet are striking. 
 
The black guillemot is very popular with the Shetland Islanders who refer to them as ‘Tysties’.
